Circles
Circles is a really special and quite a unique song for me .
I wrote it about jamie - my best friend from childhood .
Jamie and I met when we were really little . I’m not sure we were even a year old .
Our mums always said we were very different as babies ….. jamie was like a little monkey - climbing and crawling everywhere …. Where as I was a chubby little thing that just sat around eating haha .
His family lived around the corner from ours and for years we were completely inseparable .
Playing games in the park , collecting football cards , flying kites , riding bikes , getting sweets from the shop at the bottom of his road and fish and chips every Friday .
We’d sleep over at each others houses and our families would go on holiday together and spend blissful summer evenings on the beach .
It was such a simple and happy time . they will always be some of my most cherished memories .
Life happens though , it gets busy and people follow different paths .
We’ve both moved about a lot in our adult lives and it hasn’t always been so easy to spend time together .
When we do though , it’s like we’re eight years old again . he still makes me cry with laughter and we can talk about anything . I feel so grateful to still have that …. Even if its not as often as it once was .
People that know you so well and for so long are unbelievably precious . You can’t buy or replicate that kind of friendship . Its a rare and beautiful thing and I value it more with each passing year .
As for the song itself , I’m so thrilled to have gabby involved .
I’ve been a massive fan of her’s ever since I heard her music over a decade ago .
We both supported Ed Sheeran in Australia in 2012 , just as the original “all the little lights” album was starting to gain momentum , so like so many people involved in the making of this album , this feels like a really lovely full “circle” moment (no pun intended …)
Apparently gabby saw me busking in Bath even earlier than this and bought a cd .
Its so funny how life works and this all really ties in to the core meaning of the song
“we’re circles , we’re circles you see . We go round round the sun in and out like the sea , I’ll circle round you you will circle round me”
Wherever life takes us , whoever we become and whatever may happen - there are some people that will always be an intrinsic part of who we are .
I’m so thankful jamie is one of those for me .
